A new website for a luxurious experience

Condé Nast, publishers of luxury titles including Vogue, GQ and Traveller, needed a more adaptable CMS to house their established Johansens website. By migrating their website to WordPress, we knew we could empower the publishing team – making it effortless for them to update SEO and be more responsive to industry movement.

Johansens is a reference for the discerning traveller, with advice on selected luxury hotels, spas and venues across the globe. Their new website needed to echo the sleek, pleasurable experience, familiar to readers of all Condé Nast publications.

Built in WordPress, the new site doesn’t just offer a seamless user experience for Johansens’ target market. The backend is equally sleek – separating different types of content and making it easy for the publishing team to manage in-house. They’re now equipped with the website they need to respond quickly to their continually shifting industry.

The flexibility of WordPress

Behind the scenes, the Johansens team were finding it difficult to maintain their website, which was initially built using the Umbraco CMS. Making even the most minor updates meant regularly waiting for help from a central digital department.

They needed a familiar CMS everyone felt comfortable using – WordPress provided the answer. The Johansens publishers can now readily make content updates themselves, without the need for external help.

Successful data migration

Every CMS handles data structure differently, so migrating Johansens’ data from Umbraco to WordPress was a particular focus. We wrote a script to convert shortcodes into WordPress Advanced Custom Fields database fields, and mapped the old fields to the new.

The abundance of high-quality images and map functionality would typically slow a site down, and had proved an issue for Johansens in the past. However, with the migration to WordPress and WP Engine hosting, we made significant performance improvements.

“As a team their communication was excellent – they kept everything on deadline and within budget, which is really important.”
