Our best Senior Developers drive what we can do as an agency, and use their experience to lead teams in delivering technical excellence for our clients. You will be a key part of a scrum team, working with customer facing roles to design technical solutions, promoting best practice internally and externally, and heading up research and development projects.

As a senior WordPress developer, you will likely have expertise across a number of languages and frameworks – both within a WordPress context and beyond. Like our technical team, you will likely have enjoyed exploring opportunities and technologies outside the standard WordPress stack – including React, AMP, PWAs, Node, Elasticsearch, Ionic and advanced API integrations.

You’ll be accountable for

  • Delivering success – through planning and implementing technical solutions
  • Project related activities, including: some client-facing communications, attending ceremonies & meetings, technical planning and estimating effort required
  • Leading strategic projects to drive forward innovation
  • Sharing technical insight with the team and wider organisation
  • Providing technical-steer and advice to team members

What you’ll be up to

  • Attending Discovery and Definition meetings to understand client requirements and helping to plan technical solutions that best meet their goals and budget
  • Helping to plan technical approaches and devising programmes of work.Producing high quality, standards compliant code
  • Building and implementing new features and functionality to existing WordPress systems
  • Presenting technical solutions in simple non-technical language to clients
  • Supporting learning and development of others within the team via mentoring and coaching
  • Staying up-to-date with technical standards and sharing knowledge with wider team via training and knowledge sharing
  • Contributing to re-scoping and problem solving during sprints
  • Taking part in and contributing to project ceremonies and company meetings
  • Identify commercial opportunities for Pragmatic and communicate these ideas across the relevant teams
  • Where possible, attending events on behalf of Pragmatic, such as WordCamps and conferences
  • Contribute to occasional sales pitches and provide technical insight to potential clients

Skills & experience


  • Passionate about WordPress
  • At least 5 years experience developing and delivering WordPress websites – ideally larger-scale sites
  • Deep understanding of how WordPress works
  • Highly proficient in PHP
  • Excellent understanding of front end technologies, including modern JavaScript frameworks
  • Understanding the server stack and where WordPress sits
  • Experience providing code-reviews
  • Ideally, experience implementing WooCommerce, BuddyPress and multisites
  • Experience integrating with RESTful APIs
  • Good understanding of GIT and version control
  • Good communication and collaboration skills – working as part of a team
  • Strong problem solving skills, naturally inquisitive and someone that enjoys finding solutions
  • Excellent organisation skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks and manage own time
  • Someone that actively seeks out support from wider team to help improve their skills

Desirable (we know developers tend to lean towards specific areas, so we don’t expect senior developers to be experts in everything):

  • Basic server admin (including AWS)
  • Comfortable in the terminal – including using WP-CLI
  • Experience of using Node
  • Understanding of Object Oriented Programming
  • Knowledge & experience with testing – including unit testing
  • Using React (and other JS frameworks)
  • Implementing multisite, WooCommerce and using WordPress as a platform
  • Using Sass, CSS Variables, CSS Grid & Flexbox
  • PWA experience – understanding the basic building blocks and approach of PWA
  • Experience speaking at conferences and Meetups
